What is the Good Spirit Foundation?
GSF is a not-for-profit corporation chartered by the State of Florida. We are a 501C3 charitable organization that works with young people and their families through a variety of services including a summer camp, family and individual counseling, performance opportunities in the steel band, job opportunity programs, and scholarships for education.
The purpose of the GSF is to provide personal guidance and training to young people through a structured series of programs. It is our desire to help each young person build their self-esteem to the point that they will make quality decisions with their life. We are a non-denominational Christian based group.
How does GSF work?
GSF sponsors a Summer Camp program usually held in the month of June. The first week is for Counselor Training. Young people who have been in the program and are art least fourteen years old, or who are recommended for leadership spend a very intensive week preparing the camp facility, learning leadership skills and learning to lead each activity for camp. Our counselors and counselor trainees are the backbone of camp. We then open up regular camp for an additional three weeks. Young people starting at age ten join us for great activities including steel drums, cooking, computers, social graces, crafts, school strengthening, archery, construction, extreme golf to name a few, plus some of the greatest games such as Big Wheels, Bahia Whip and Big Foot.
All adult staffers at GSF are volunteers. Teachers, business people and retirees donate their time and expertise to provide quality time for our guests. We are looking for volunteers. Wouldn’t you like to spend some time with a young person and know that you were responsible for making a difference in a life?
The “Amazzing” Steel Drum Ensemble
The “Amazzing” Steel Drum Ensemble began as a music teaching activity for the GSF Summer Camp program in 1993. Two lead pans served as introductory instruments. Interest in the steel pans led to buying all the instruments of a pan orchestra over a period of time.
Tom Reynolds of Sanford, Florida, who is originally from St. Croix, Virgin Islands, is the hand crafter of our instruments. Tom made it possible for our group to buy the instruments at a very affordable price. The band has fourteen pan positions available along with a trap set and auxiliary percussion.
Every camper attending the GSF summer Camp Program gets the opportunity to learn to play the pans.
